Yoga for Kids

We are now offering FREE yoga taster classes for primary and junior school children every Saturday morning. Parents are able to book more sessions if they feel their child is benefiting from the free classes. Classes start from Saturday 2nd July 2016 and will run each week between 9.00am-9.45am until beginning of October.

The owner, Kris Malde, who has been sitting as a local Magistrate for over 17 years has seen increasing extreme levels of crime going through the Court system committed by youths who, as well as other factors, have experienced unstable emotional, educational and family upbringings. He believes that yoga not only improves physical fitness in children but also contributes to better academic performance and emotional balance, which grounds them for a more stable adult life. These views are backed up by clinical studies and the many online articles and research conducted by universities and health programs around the world. For example, in March 2011, yoga programs in schools and hospitals were featured in a Wall Street Journal article that summarised the many benefits for children’s overall mental health.

Further to this, the Guardian newspaper has many articles highlighting the benefits of yoga when compared to children taking medication for similar illnesses. Compared with drugs, relaxation methods, like yoga and meditation, have been shown to be as effective for a wide variety of problems found in families.

For instance, with Ritalin so widely in use for ADHD, perhaps it is unsurprising that few people have heard of the many studies showing yoga reduces it, also boosting self-esteem and relationship quality. Children describe benefits at home (better sleep patterns, less anxiety) and school (more able to concentrate, less conflict). Their parents report feeling happier, less stressed and more able to manage their child's behaviour.

The Guardian article also states “The cost of making these kinds of practices available nationwide, via the health and education systems, pales into insignificance compared with the drugs bill. Once taught, the techniques do not need a repeat prescription. The benefits to our physical and mental wellbeing would be huge.

In the meantime, families need to be proactive in identifying the non-medical solutions that work best for them at all ages. Rest assured that if you feel relaxation methods like yoga or meditation are airy-fairy, namby-pamby nonsense, you are wrong: the evidence is overwhelming.”
